Choosing the Right Calla Lily Bulbs

When selecting the right Calla Lily bulbs for your garden, consider their primary purpose. Some gardeners grow these exotic-looking flowers to add color and elegance to container and flower gardens. Others grow them for wedding bouquets or other special occasions. Your primary purpose will guide you on your color choice.

Getting Started with Growing Calla Lilies

Because of their tropical flair and nature, many are under the impression that Calla Lilies are hard to grow. They're not. These unique flowers can be grown as annuals in zones 3-8 and as perennials in zones 9-10. However, like other flower bulbs, they require well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine. They grow 24-36 inches tall, so they're a nice size for flower beds and containers.

When to Plant Calla Lily Bulbs

Calla Lily bulbs are planted in the spring, after all danger of frost has passed. If you want to get an earlier start, Calla Lily bulbs can be planted in containers and kept indoors during cooler weather.

Where to Plant Calla Lily Bulbs

Like other flower bulbs, Calla Lilies perform best when planted in well-drained soil and where they receive plenty of sunshine. They can be grown in full sun or partial shade.
If planting directly into the flower garden or borders, select a sunny to semi-shady area that has well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
If growing Calla Lilies indoors, water lightly and keep it in a cool, shaded spot until growth begins. Then move the pot to a sunny window where it can get at least 4 hours of sun a day. Water regularly and fertilize biweekly. Callas thrive in cool temperatures and high humidity.

How to Plant Calla Lily Bulbs

Plant the rhizomes 4 inches deep and 12 inches apart. If planting in containers, use a pot that has a drainage hole and use a quality potting mix. Plant 2 inches deep in a 6-inch container.

How to Grow Calla Lilies

During the growing season, water Calla Lilies liberally and feed with Van Bourgondien 100% Natural Bulb Food . After the flowers fade, reduce the amount of water. In areas where Callas are not hardy, allow the plants to dry out. Dig the rhizomes and store in dry material for the winter.
Calla Lilies are tender bulbs and often treated as annuals outside of zones 9-10. If growing in zones 3-8, you can dig up the bulbs in the fall, store them where they won't freeze over winter and replant the bulbs in the spring. If planted in pots, you can move the pots indoors during cooler weather and treat them like houseplants.
